Dieting is super common. And it seems to make sense. Calories in and calories out. But what I didn't know, and what most people don't, it that dieting makes you into a crazy person.
Dieting is the #1 cause of eating disorders.
But maybe you are stronger, and maybe the weight will stay off this time, and maybe you haven't found the right diet.
But ask yourself, has that ever worked for you? Have you ever been better off after trying to lose weight?
Yo yo dieting isn't a thing that happens sometimes. It a thing that always happens.
Here is why:
Your body is wired for survival. And food is a huge part of that. Your body has so many mechanisms to keep you eating and finding more food to eat because if you don't, you die.
So your body has strong biological signals that tell you that you are hungry, get food. And also, "there is food you should eat all of it"
If your body feels safe and fed: it tells you when you are hungry, and tells you when you are full.
If your body feels threatened or starved it will:
1) Make you think about food allll the time
2) Turn up your hunger signals so you never feel full
3) Make food seem really important and awesome
4) Drive you to eat huge amounts of it anytime you can
This is called an eating disorder.
To create this disorder around food, it must feel starved.
To create this feeling, all you need to do is diet.
Your body just knows that you are starving. That it's having to use its precious fat & muscle stores to cannibalize your body to keep going. And it freaks out!
What your body doesn't know is that when it drives you to eat, you have 100% of getting food, and lots of it, all the time.
And so we eat wayyy too much. We binge. And then we freak out because we ate so much. And then we...diet some more. And it gets worse and worse.
Learning how to eat well without pushing all those survival instincts is the only way to get out of that cycle. If you want some support in getting out of the spiral you can go to www.LydiaWente.com/apply and snag a spot for a free 45 min session.
